Running. Faster! Faster! But where was he to go? He did it anyway. Quickening his pace, he hurried through the darkness. It was warm, so did that mean he wasn’t in the Northern Water Tribe anymore? Impossible. He had just been there the previous night. Was it even possible to go to sleep in one place and end up in another? His mind buzzed with unanswerable questions.

Why was he still running? Shouldn’t he have stopped by that time? Why had he not? Where was he anyways? The questions began to taunt him. Now he was eagerly telling himself to stop. But his arms and legs didn’t cooperate, and he kept going. His body ached all over, so why did he not stop? Eventually, he was begging himself to stop running. It burned. The pain pulsing through his body felt…unreal.

STOP! He screamed mentally, but nothing happened. Instead, he continued to go faster and faster until he was nothing more than a mere blur. It felt like his feet were bleeding, but was he? That couldn’t have happened, could it? Everything going through his head was as vague and blurry as himself. Moving so quickly wasn’t humanly possible. STOP! He thought again. Now he was begging.

Why was he doing this? There was no purpose for him any longer. He should just go with it, and run through the darkness until something light came up. Every part of him felt inhumanly pained. Where was he? He finally asked himself. The question hadn’t occurred to him rather than he was out of the Water Tribe. The heat… Was he on fire?

Kai awoke in a cold sweat. He was on the floor, right beside the fire. He was wrapped in his blankets like a cocoon. Laying in his own sweat was something that didn’t exactly please him. It was disgusting. He sat up straight, and struggled to untangle himself from the blankets without touching the fire beside him. After another moment of struggle, he scooted away from the fire and kicked the blankets off of him.

He placed a hand over his rapidly beating heart and sighed, drawing a deep breath. The ice dome was empty, rather than himself. It was silent, except the cackle of the fire brought life to the eeriness. Slick sweat dampened his hairline, and he sighed again, feeling purely disgusted. Another nightmare that meant nothing. Why was he so scared anyways? He couldn’t think straight immediately after waking up, and it took a moment for him to sort out his thoughts.

He scrambled to his feet and drew another breath. Picking up the wool blankets from the ground, he tossed them back onto the bed and sighed. He needed fresh air, now. But, he needed to get changed, rather than take a walk in sweat-drenched clothing. Quickly, he pulled on a fresh pair of clothing and ran his fingers through his hair again. He’d just be out for a bit, no longer than a few minutes. Kai wasn’t one to get sidetracked very easily

He stepped out of his house, the brisk air he was ever so used to clung to his skin. The breeze instantly swept the heat from him, and he felt better within moments. The moon was nearly full, and his eyes followed the sky. Something about the night always made him feel better. Yes, he knew that the moon made his waterbending stronger, but it was something else that he couldn’t make out.

Not wanting to go back inside, he started to walk alongside the stream. He looked down at the water, making out his appearance. A sigh escaped his lips, but not a depressed one. More like a sigh of relief. A smile crept onto his lips now, and he closed his eyes. For a moment, he wanted to just jump into the water. Was that even allowed? He thought about it a moment, and contemplated whether he’d jump into the water or just stare at it the rest of the night.

Quickly, he made up his mind. Yanking off his thick jacket, he jumped into the water. Immediately, a rush overcame him. His head was beneath the surface, and he exhaled, bubbles swirling around him. He was glad that he decided to jump into the water. It was very refreshing. Now, all he could hope for was that nobody would come to tell him off.

He swam deeper into the water, not caring about breathing at that moment. He took in everything he could, and that wasn’t very much. The water was icy cold, but it felt good on his skin. His lungs burned, but it didn’t seem to matter. After about a minute, he couldn’t breathe any longer. The world began to be fuzzy around the edges of his eyes. It was time to take a breath of water.

He hastily swam towards the top of the water. His lungs begged for oxygen, and he did all he could to emerge from the water. Finally, he could see the surface, and within another moment, his head emerged from the water and the cold air bit at his cheeks. He took hasty, gasping breaths for about a minute before he hoisted himself out of the water. Truth be told, he actually enjoyed that.
