Running. Faster! Faster! But where was he to go? He did it anyway. Quickening his pace, he hurried through the darkness. It was warm, so did that mean he wasn’t in the Northern Water Tribe anymore? Impossible. He had just been there the previous night. Was it even possible to go to sleep in one place and end up in another? His mind buzzed with unanswerable questions.

Why was he still running? Shouldn’t he have stopped by that time? Why had he not? Where was he anyways? The questions began to taunt him. Now he was eagerly telling himself to stop. But his arms and legs didn’t cooperate, and he kept going. His body ached all over, so why did he not stop? Eventually, he was begging himself to stop running. It burned. The pain pulsing through his body felt…unreal.

STOP! He screamed mentally, but nothing happened. Instead, he continued to go faster and faster until he was nothing more than a mere blur. It felt like his feet were bleeding, but was he? That couldn’t have happened, could it? Everything going through his head was as vague and blurry as himself. Moving so quickly wasn’t humanly possible. STOP! He thought again. Now he was begging.

Why was he doing this? There was no purpose for him any longer. He should just go with it, and run through the darkness until something light came up. Every part of him felt inhumanly pained. Where was he? He finally asked himself. The question hadn’t occurred to him rather than he was out of the Water Tribe. The heat… Was he on fire?

Kai awoke in a cold sweat. He was on the floor, right beside the fire. He was wrapped in his blankets like a cocoon. Laying in his own sweat was something that didn’t exactly please him. It was disgusting. He sat up straight, and struggled to untangle himself from the blankets without touching the fire beside him. After another moment of struggle, he scooted away from the fire and kicked the blankets off of him.

He placed a hand over his rapidly beating heart and sighed, drawing a deep breath. The ice dome was empty, rather than himself. It was silent, except the cackle of the fire brought life to the eeriness. Slick sweat dampened his hairline, and he sighed again, feeling purely disgusted. Another nightmare that meant nothing. Why was he so scared anyways? He couldn’t think straight immediately after waking up, and it took a moment for him to sort out his thoughts.

He scrambled to his feet and drew another breath. Picking up the wool blankets from the ground, he tossed them back onto the bed and sighed. He needed fresh air, now. But, he needed to get changed, rather than take a walk in sweat-drenched clothing. Quickly, he pulled on a fresh pair of clothing and ran his fingers through his hair again. He’d just be out for a bit, no longer than a few minutes. Kai wasn’t one to get sidetracked very easily

He stepped out of his house, the brisk air he was ever so used to clung to his skin. The breeze instantly swept the heat from him, and he felt better within moments. The moon was nearly full, and his eyes followed the sky. Something about the night always made him feel better. Yes, he knew that the moon made his waterbending stronger, but it was something else that he couldn’t make out.

Not wanting to go back inside, he started to walk alongside the stream. He looked down at the water, making out his appearance. A sigh escaped his lips, but not a depressed one. More like a sigh of relief. A smile crept onto his lips now, and he closed his eyes. For a moment, he wanted to just jump into the water. Was that even allowed? He thought about it a moment, and contemplated whether he’d jump into the water or just stare at it the rest of the night.

Quickly, he made up his mind. Yanking off his thick jacket, he jumped into the water. Immediately, a rush overcame him. His head was beneath the surface, and he exhaled, bubbles swirling around him. He was glad that he decided to jump into the water. It was very refreshing. Now, all he could hope for was that nobody would come to tell him off.

He swam deeper into the water, not caring about breathing at that moment. He took in everything he could, and that wasn’t very much. The water was icy cold, but it felt good on his skin. His lungs burned, but it didn’t seem to matter. After about a minute, he couldn’t breathe any longer. The world began to be fuzzy around the edges of his eyes. It was time to take a breath of water.

He hastily swam towards the top of the water. His lungs begged for oxygen, and he did all he could to emerge from the water. Finally, he could see the surface, and within another moment, his head emerged from the water and the cold air bit at his cheeks. He took hasty, gasping breaths for about a minute before he hoisted himself out of the water. Truth be told, he actually enjoyed that.

Jeyra gave a small smile, her lips pursing together. "I go wherever I want!” she boasted, waving an arm to show the vastness of the world that was hers to explore. It was somewhat true, seeing that nothing could wake up her little old grandmother. Jeyra loved the old woman and all, but the urge to explore the unknown was too strong to ignore. Besides, her exploring never hurt anyone or anything. It was all in good fun.

“I’m swimming, as you can see,” Kai said. She grinned and giggled when he pressed a finger to his lips and told her not to tell anyone.

Jeyra rocked back and forth on her heels, clasping her hands behind her back and raising her chin. “Hmm, we’ll see about that. Maybe if you’re nice to me I’ll keep my lips sealed!” She let out another giggle. With kids her age and annoying adults the ‘threat’ would usually be serious, but Kai was neither of those and he was really nice.

When the water splashed onto Jeyra’s face she flinched in surprise, mostly because it was cold and unexpected. She ran her gloved hand across her face to wipe the water off and stuck her tongue out childishly. “Not a good start with the nice thing!” she kidded, then shrugged, signaling it was fine.

“So, what brings you out here so late?” Kai asked her. Jeyra grinned.

“I don’t like to sleep,” she said with mock cheekiness. She put her hands on her hips. “And my grandma can’t get enough of it. So, I get to sneak out whenever she’s snoring like a dinosaur.”

“And why are you out?” she asked in return, smiling. “Up to no good, I hope, like me!”

“What are you, seven or eight years old?” Kai raised his eyebrows at her. Without an answer, he chuckled and said, “You must have a lot of freedom, I’m guessing?” he asked, but he didn’t expect an answer. He stretched his arms upwards and yawned tiredly. Maybe he should’ve continued with his sleep when he had awoken. But, he never wanted to relive that dream. But, he wasn’t living it… he was dreaming it. The thought was confusing, and he did all he could to not think about it.

“Maybe if I’m nice to you, huh?” he asked, looking over at the little girl. She seemed much older than she was, at least to him. Maybe it was because the little girl wasn’t completely strange or a girl who cried a lot. He didn’t know. “I’ll accept that challenge!” a grin planted on his lips, exposing a pearly white array of teeth.

He made a face when she pointed out that he had gotten her wet. And how he had started badly with the whole “being nice” challenge. He grimaced. “Sorry, I’ll be better about it next time.” But she had shrugged it off, so that meant it was fine.

He listened quietly as she explained the reason she was out so late. “Oh yes, sneaking out. I haven’t done that in a while. Other than tonight of course… but I wouldn’t consider it sneaking out.” He chuckled. Typically, when he was out of his lovely ice dome, he was either doing his part to protect the Northern Water Tribe or exploring. Exploring the world around him was something he didn’t get to do so often. He was a warrior in the Water Tribe, and it was his duty to keep everybody safe. That took up most of his time.

He pondered her question for a moment. Why was he out there, anyways? He furrowed his eyebrows thoughtfully and shrugged. “Up to no good.” He grinned.

[ { { kai ++ jeyra } } ] Jeyrawords
“Seven years and four months!” Jeyra stated proudly, then nodding at his next statement. And seventeen days, to be exact. Plus she knew she had been born around noontime, so there’s another twelve hours. Yep, had to be exact about these things! It was important, especially when someone thought they were older than you and acted like they were the boss of everyone who was younger. Which, admittedly, Jeyra tended to do more than on occasion.

“Oh yes, sneaking out. I haven’t done that in a while. Other than tonight of course… but I wouldn’t consider it sneaking out,” Kai said. Jeyra giggled, her simplest form of response to most things.

A quiet splash sounded from the water, and Jeyra looked over to see what it was. A fish, perhaps?

Upon closer inspection Jeyra realized that it was indeed not a fish. Fish did not have eyes the size of her fists, nor did they glow a brighter white than the sky on a full moon. Jeyra took a hesitant step towards Kai, away from the edge of the water. The eyes got closer and closer to the surface, and with them came a large, hulking figure from the water. It almost resembled a toad, but Jeyra was not afraid of toads, and she was petrified by the mere sight of this creature.

A spirit.

“Kai...” she said quietly, grabbing the sleeve of his arm. The eyes stared straight at her, piercing through the water and into, what felt like, Jeyra’s very soul. She swallowed the lump in her throat and held in a shrill screech as the spirit finally burst through the surface of the stream, water running down its slimy, warty sides. Every time it breathed it made a horrible croaking noise, yet it was much more high-pitched than a real toad. This... This thing didn’t even look like just a toad anymore. It had long, muscled front legs with nubs for feet, yet its back legs still resembled that of a reptile’s.

“It’s a spirit,” Jeyra choked out, tightening her grip on Kai’s sleeve. Her entire body had frozen up. The thing that took away her daddy.

“Well then, live the rest of your childhood to the fullest!” Kai chuckled, wagging his finger at her playfully. “When you’re old, like me, you’re going to have to take responsibility of things you do not need to care about when your under the age of eighteen.” He said; his words sincere but his tone playful. All the adults were always either busy, or doing their part in the Water Tribe. It could get so boring. He envied the children, who could run around like there wasn’t a care in the world.

He looked up at the moon, which was shown brightly beside the stars. He smirked to himself. Oh, the moon. It had a way of… taking his breath away. He probably thought this because water bending was practically all about the moon. But still—

His thoughts were cut off when he head Jeyra coo his name softly, and when she tugged on the sleeve of his coat. He looked at her, “What is it?” he followed her gaze to the water, where something with bright, huge eyes stared straight at her. His eyebrow twitched. He knew what it was. A spirit. A chill ran down his spine and he got to his feet.

The spirit burst through the surface of the water, and Kai got to his feet, yanking Jeyra up with him. Man, was he glad she came and that he got out of the water. His eyes were still on the spirit monster when he crouched down beside Jeyra and said, “Run, now.”

Jeyra tucked her face into her head, unable to bear the spirit’s piercing eyes as it stared at her. It emitted another high-pitched croaking noises, making her cringe in fright. Kai bent down to her height and she stared at him, horror and fright engraved in her features.

“Run, now,” he told her. Jeyra swallowed the heavy lump in her throat.

“B-But it’s gonna take you away. It’s gonna take you like – ” Jeyra held back the rest of her words and then dutifully nodded, racing away as fast as she could, back to the city to get help. It’s what Daddy would want. He would want her to do what she could.

She was completely out of breath by the time she reached the chief’s palace, panting on her knees and banging on the cold, icy door with her fists. The locked switched and the door swung open to reveal a disgruntled guard. However, his annoyance soon turned to worry upon seeing the frightened little girl.

“What’s wrong, Jeyra?” he asked urgently, kneeling down beside her. Jeyra looked up at him.

“There’s a water spirit. The stream, and Kai...” she gasped between heavy breaths. The guard grimaced before racing into the building, calling out urgent orders. A few moments later a dozen or so warriors and benders were racing outside and towards the stream. Jeyra collapsed against the wall, still out of breath. She felt so weak and helpless. Just like that day...

Jeyra let out a small sob and quickly got to her feet, racing after then men who were headed to assist Kai in defeating the spirit.

The innocent little girl beside Kai must’ve been much more frightened than he was. “I’ll be fine.” he waved his hand for her to leave. In upmost honesty, he wasn’t too sure about what he had just told Jeyra; it was probably a lie. He felt a little better when she had ran off, but now he was alone.

The water spirit was staring at him with a cocked head before it sent a wave of water was sent his direction. He bent the water back towards the spirit, except freezing it into ice spears. The ice sliced through the spirit, leaving little holes in its chest. But, they healed. Just like that. He blinked, shocked. But, he continued to bend as much water over the spirit, enclosing it in a large body of water. Then, he froze the water than had closed around the spirit, hoping it’d hold.

It didn’t, sadly. Within moments of when the spirit was closed in iced, it broke itself free, sending shards of ice everywhere. Kai did all he could to melt the ice, when he realized other warriors were now by his side. So, Jeyra went to tell the chief, hadn’t she? Well, that was helpful. He put it in his head to thank her later. Shaking the thought away, he continued to attack the spirit beast.

Jeyra panted as she approached the stream once again, little puffs of air appearing in front of her lips every time she exhaled. The brave warriors had already reached Kai for backup, and upon seeing that Jeyra couldn’t help but feel relieved. Warriors of the Northern Water Tribe were known for their fierceness, so everything would be all right. Right?

Standing off by the bushes, a good twenty yards away from the commotion and fighting, Jeyra couldn’t help the wave of sickly nostalgia that washed over her. The taste of salty air hit the roof of her mouth as she attempted to fight back those memories of two years past.

“Look out!” Jeyra was yanked out of her thoughts as the water spirit spat out a wave of water. The warriors parted and jumped out of the way, and the powerful gush of water slammed into the icy wall only a few feet beside her. Jeyra flinched and scooted to the side a bit, not wanting to get caught in the crossfire again.

She didn’t know why she was still there, or why she had come back in the first place. But something told her that it would be wrong to just run and hide like a baby, so there she remained, watching as the water spirit was slowly overwhelmed by the fierce warriors.

Kai looked up at the enormous spirit beast standing before him before sending more icy spears into it. Damn, nothing was working. Why was it that spirits had to leave with a fight? He sighed to himself as a wave of water thrust itself onto the shore, but luckily, it didn’t hit him like it did to a few other men.

Looking over his shoulder, he noticed Jeyra, standing there. He raised an eyebrow. What was she still doing there? Slipping through the crowd, he approached her hastily and crouched down, “I thought I told you to go?” he said, keeping his voice as natural and calm as he could keep it. Though, in reality, he was scared. Very scared. But, would he admit that? No. He was too determined to get the spirit the hell out of there than he was to admit he was scared of it.

Now turning his attention back to the retched beast, he had noticed it moved a bit, coming closer towards the warriors. And, he swore he saw it reach out and grab one of the warriors. But no, maybe he was so tired he couldn’t tell the difference between his dreams and his reality.

[ { { kai ++ jeyra } } ] Eyukawords
Eyuka awoke to someone prodding her in the shoulder with something rough. She groaned and flailed her arm out at whatever was trying to wake her up. It couldn’t be morning; it wasn’t possible. Seven hours ago Eyuka had finally settled down to sleep after a long day of healing practice, as well as treating some of the elders who were complaining of aching body parts. She peeked an eye open to see her father standing over her bed. The rough object was the end of his bony club. Both of Eyuka’s eyes fluttered open at the sight of her father’s favorable weapon.

“Dad?” she mumbled, sitting up in bed and rubbing her weary eyes. “What’s the matter?”

Her father’s dark blue eyes were urgent. She hadn’t inherited those angry looking eyes; instead she had received her mother’s simple brown eyes, something that Eyuka was very proud of. In a tribe filled with blue-eyed people, her modestly brown eyes made her stand out a little bit. Not that Eyuka was one to work the crowd; no, she preferred a more private, intimate relationship with people, and her books, for that matter. But still, she liked that her eyes made her different.

“There’s a spirit by the stream on the southern side. We’re going to need you to help heal anyone who sustains an injury,” he said gravely, backing up to the hanging leather pelt that marked the barrier between her room and the rest of the house. “I’ll meet you there.”

And with that Eyuka was left alone with her thoughts. A spirit again? It had been a good couple of weeks since a spirit had last ravaged their tribe. She had started to hope that maybe things were looking up, but compared to last year, things were only getting worse.

Eyuka let out a sigh and quickly got up to change out of her nightgown. She slipped on her traditional woman’s water tribe dress and then ran out of the house, grabbing her special sack of emergency healing water. The water in that sack had extra special healing properties, and Eyuka hoped she wouldn’t have to use it tonight.

She ran as fast as she could to the site where her father said the spirit was. The sounds of water and shouts met her ears before she even got there. A wild roar sounded off, clearly that of an enraged spirit.

When Eyuka finally got there, the first thing she saw was the awful spirit. It was some sort of toad spirit, with slick, slimy-looking skin. The mere sight of it made Eyuka’s skin crawl, and that was saying something. She had a notably high tolerance from disgusting things, blood and guts included. It was why she especially loved being a healer. She was able to help people, and that gave her a sense of purpose.

Eyuka scooted over to the side and waited for someone to go down or for someone to cry out in anguish. If they did, she would make quick business of running over there and getting them out of the battle to heal. That was really the most Eyuka ever saw of battle; running through it, evading attacks.

As she was standing there, about ten yards away from the middle of the battle, she heard a quiet cough. Eyuka looked to the side and, to her horror, saw a little girl standing there. Jeyra, she believed her name was. Without skipping a beat Eyuka rushed over and scooped the girl up, ignoring her surprised gasp and automatic flailing.

“You should not be here,” Eyuka growled. Normally Eyuka was amazing with kids, but when they got into trouble or went somewhere where they did not belong, she did not hesitate to bring down the law. She dropped the girl to the ground and pushed her lightly in the back, towards the city.

“Get back home, now, and maybe I won’t tell your grandmother about this,” she said in a low voice. Jeyra swallowed and nodded with wide eyes before running off. Eyuka let out a sigh of relief and quickly went back to the scene of the battle. It was then that she noticed a guy standing close by to where Jeyra had once been. She recognized him as Kai. She had seen him around before. Frowning her lips, she walked over to him, keeping one eye on the battle. She always had to be on the lookout, just in case.

“Are you hurt?” she asked, looking him up and down. It didn’t appear that anything was wrong with him.

[ { { kai ++ jeyra } } ] Whoo-2
[ { { kai ++ jeyra } } ] Kaiwords
Kai shot another wave of water towards the spirit, enclosing its arms in ice. This did nothing to stop the beast, though. He took a panting breath and looked over a Jeyra for another moment. Somebody new came up, picked her up, said something to her, and dropped her to the ground again. What was her name again? He racked his mind for a moment. Oh yes, Eyuka.

She was a healer, wasn’t she? He had seen her healing wounded warriors before, but, he hadn’t ever needed to be healed. He was always careful with what he did and how he bended, so it was never a problem for him. Now, she was approaching him. He didn’t bother to look at her; she was at the corner of her eyes. He shot more spears of ice into the giant creature and grimaced. “How to stop an angry spirit beast from attacking.” He muttered under his breath, rolling his eyes.

She was speaking to him too. “Are you hurt?” she had asked him. He glanced over at her for a moment before shaking his head, “No, I’m fine.” He said quickly, enclosing the beast in ice once again with the other warriors. Somehow, it continued to break through the ice. He pursed his lips. Nothing seemed to be working.

God, how were they supposed to stop this… this thing?! It was practically unstoppable. It just kept on fighting. It hadn’t even broken into a sweat, if that was possible for evil, angry spirit monsters. The beast was now looking at him. Oh, great. It shot a wave of water towards him, and in the water were icy spears. Before he had a chance to think, the water and icy spears had hit him. Luckily, none of the ice managed to get in him. Except for one, that was embedded in his arm. He grunted, reaching over for it and yanking it out of his arm. He pursed his lips as blood oozed off the side of his left arm. The only up side of this was that there was a healer right beside him. Looking up at her, he said, “Okay, now I’m hurt.”

He brought his gaze back towards the beast, who had now turned its attention towards the other warriors. Was it trying to take them out, one by one? He couldn’t believe it was stupid enough not to notice the healer right there. Wow, he hoped he didn’t just jinx that.

[ { { kai ++ jeyra } } ] Eyukawords
“No, I’m fine,” Kai replied to Eyuka’s relief. For some reason, it was always the ones who seemed initially fine that ended up worst off in the end. She was glad that this was not the case in this instance.

Anyways, Eyuka was glad that she had gotten Jeyra out of the way. Who knew what would have happened if she hadn’t noticed the seven year old. Honestly, it was as if no one had ever taught the girl any basic common sense. Who in the right mind would stand blatantly in the middle of a battle without purpose or protection?

Eyuka brought her attention back to the battle, occasionally moving side to side a step or two, searching for anyone in the group of warriors that might need healing right away. Her eyes would sweep across the ground now and then, double-checking that no one had fallen. Eyuka’s heart was beating fast with the nerves and adrenaline of being in the midst of a battle. Even if she was not destined to be a fighter, she still loved the thrill of the moment, a stark contrast against her usually laid back attitude. Hey, whoever said that people had to strictly adhere to one set trait?

For a moment she thought she saw someone go down, and she took a step forward to retrieve him, only to see the warrior get back up and continue attacking. Although Eyuka was a healer, she knew the boundaries a warrior had when it came to receiving help during a battle. For some, they had too much pride. And sometimes that was their downfall, but Eyuka respected that. It was not her place to force a warrior out of battle unless their wounds proved to possibly be fatal.

The creature sent an icy blast of water in their direction. Eyuka swiftly leapt back a few feet out of danger, but the same could not be said for Kai. He took the attack and remained standing after the hit. He had been unscathed for the most part, save for a small, icy spear that had wedged itself into his left arm.

“Okay, now I’m hurt,” he said, looking up at her. The faint trace of an amused smile played on Eyuka’s lips for a fraction of a second before she stepped closer to him. She took his arm in one hand and, with the other, swiftly pulled water from the ground and into her two hands.

“This’ll just take a few seconds,” Eyuka said, one eye still on the fight. She pressed her hands firmly against the wound, surrounding it with water, healing the jagged cut. Ice was always tricky, as it often left wounds with ragged shapes to them. Within a few moments the damage was healed, and Eyuka removed her hands.

“There you-” Eyuka stopped short on her sentence. The spirit had leaped forward, out of the water and onto the edge of the shore. It let out a horrible screeching noise and immediately afterwards, shot a torrent of water out of its mouth, headed straight for her and Kai.

Eyuka hissed under her breath and leaped to the side, her hair loops smacking against her face. The spirit let out another blast of water, and Eyuka could see it was looking right at her. Did it know she was healing the warriors? That was probably why it was attacking her. Eyuka skidded to the side, just out of the way enough so that the water only really got her arm. Still though, it stung, most likely from some of the icy chunks that had been in it.

The spirit made another screeching noise and seemed to inhale before excreting blasts of icy water from all of its pores. Eyuka ducked down as she had been taught, but the water still lashed against the front of her body and face. She should have stayed further back.

[ { { kai ++ jeyra } } ] Kaiwords
Kai pursed his lips as she pressed her hands on his wounded arm. He bit his lip, expecting for pain of some sort. But the water, which was warm, soothed the pain. He ran his arm over the new scar and smiled at her slightly. He was honestly grateful there was a healer there, "Thank you." He said to her.

He brought his gaze back to the monster, who had brought his attention back to the two of them. It was probably more to the healer beside him, but its eyes were still on the two of them. It shot water to the both of them. Before it had a chance to hit them, he bent the water above them. Then, he froze the water into spears and shot it back at the beast.

He continued to bend water at it with the rest of the warriors. The beast released a screeching noise that pierced his ears, and more water was shot. Except this time, it was launched to Eyuka.

Luckily, she ducked away from it. He bent the water that had been shot to her towards the the best again, wrapping the spirit in a snake-like wrap. It tightened against the spirit in the same snake like way. However, the wrap just oozed into the best like nothing had happened. Great. This thing was impossible to stop from attacking.

Approaching Eyuka, he raised an eyebrow at her and asked, "Are you all right?" He furrowed his eyebrow a moment before glancing back at the creature. "You should hide or something. I don't suppose you want that thing attacking you any more than it all ready has."
