Fai looked up at the sky, the sun setting on her calmly. The darkness was something she longed for. A few more minutes and she’d be able to get out of this terrible place. No, she wasn’t planning on running away. She did this every night; escaping the little cot she lived in once and a while was nice. Her step-mother put way too much stress on her, and every night, she’d just get out of the house and have a little fun. She was getting impatient now. Pacing her bedroom did little to ease her impatience.

She threw herself back onto her bed and groaned. “How long does it take for the sun to set?” she yelled to the ceiling. Though, she knew she wouldn’t be getting a reply unless she had the ability to bring rocks to life. But, she did have that ability. However, that was only to control earth, not bring it to life. She buried her head into her pillow, squeezing her eyes shut. After a few moments, she hoped the sun had went down and rolled onto her back. It was still setting into the sky. She groaned again, punching the air. But, she somehow managed to punch the ceiling as the rock went upwards; leaving the illusion that she had punched the ceiling. Her step-mother and father were not going to be very happy.

Finally, the thousands of hues, colors, and shades in the sky disappeared, and it grew dark within the next few moments. A grin crept onto her lips, and she thrust herself off of her bed, “Finally.” She mumbled under her breath, the grin remaining on her face. She waited a few minutes, listening to see if the cot went silent. When she decided it was quiet enough, she peeked out of her window, the cool breeze finding its way through her dark brunette hair.

Kicking her legs over the windowsill, she thrust herself out of the second story bedroom. Before she hit the ground, she quickly used her bending to shift the dirt into a soft mattress for her to land on. Once she hit the dirt, the debris was sent flying, but she quickly cleared it from the rock cot with her bending. Who knew bending could come in handy so often. She used her bending once again to clean the dirt from her clothing. Once she was satisfied, she started down the dirt path and into town.

Living in the highest point in Ba Sing Se, everything was quiet nice. But, she wasn’t happy with her lifestyle. It was…boring. There was no adventure in this life, so all she could do was pretend that she was enjoying herself. While in reality, she hated every waking moment of it. Her nightmares were slowly shifting into dreams she longed for every evening. But, she hardly slept any more. She was turning nocturnal, in a way. Never sleeping at night was something she did. And, she always fell asleep in the morning. So, that was considered nocturnal, correct?

Getting deeper into the city, she spotted a bar. Sounded like something she could have fun with. However, she didn’t drink rum. It was the gambling that she had fun with. So, just a few games and she’d be done? It didn’t seem likely. She had fifteen gold pieces in her pocket to gamble with, and that was enough. All she needed to do was play with strategy and she’d be good. Easy enough, right? A smirk rested on her lips as she entered the bar with pride.

Sadly, there was no place to gamble at this bar, only a table where men and few women gathered to arm wrestle. She was pretty strong, so this would be easy. She pushed her way towards the table and took a seat on the stone seat. She studied the buff man sitting in front of her before resting her elbow on the table. “So, shall we begin or what?” she scoffed, raising her eyebrows slyly at the man. He narrowed his eyes at her before resting his elbow on the table and gripped her hand. She grinned, and grasped at his rough hand.

The man grunted before putting little muscle into yanking her hand against the table. It was expected. The man took the gold coin she had bet and stuffed it into his pocket. “Wait, sir—can I have a do-over?” she asked innocently, blinking. It was all in the plan. The man raised an eyebrow before a grin planted on his lips and he sat down again.

“All right, little girl,” the man said gruffly, betting all of his money. Stupid old man. She thought, but held back the urge to smirk so she held the innocent look. He rested his elbow on the table and flexed his fingers before grasping her hand. Once he began to push her hand towards the table, she used little muscle to force his hand against the table. The man looked at her in awe as she took her winnings.

“Thank you!” she smirked at the man as she slipped the gold pieces into her knapsack. “All is appreciated.” She told him. That was how it was done. She thought. That was what she always did; trick people into thinking she was weak, when really, she was very tough… and strong. Poor guy, he’d have to earn back those gold pieces somehow. Before any havoc erupted throughout the bar, Fai exited quickly.

She pressed her back against the rock wall of the bar, the night air against her skin. She could hear angry voices from inside the bar. Wow, only one game and they were all ready getting mad. She snickered, shaking her head. That was what he got for underestimating her. But, it was part of her game to make people underestimate her, so why did it matter to her? She drew a long breath before opening her knapsack to begin counting the gold pieces.

Thirty gold pieces plus fifteen gold pieces? Forty-five gold pieces. It must have been her lucky day. She grinned to herself, dropping the pieces of gold back into her knapsack. Gambling was her favorite was of earning money, rather than when she hunted in solitude. However, she rarely hunted anymore. Maybe she should have started doing that again. That was definitely something she should have considered. But, killing wasn’t something she liked very much.

She heard stirring from inside of the bar when the front door opened and she heard a voice. “I want a rematch little girl.”
