DON'T WANNA HEAR YOUR SAD SONGS
DON'T WANNA FEEL YOUR PAIN

The air was unusually cool for this time of year in Ba Sing Sei. It was a nice change from the blistering heat the city had been experiencing over the past few days. As usual, the streets were bustling with daily life. Merchants were advertising and selling their wares to various passerbies, children played, friends and families congregated in small groups to talk amongst themselves.

Hardly any of them really noticed the lone figure walking swiftly down the way. It was impossible to see her near-colorless face; it was hidden within the shadows of a brown, hooded cloak that fell to her mid-thighs, concealing all of her upper-body. For all anyone could see, she could have been a courier, or some apprentice on an errand. She might even have been a boy, considering the black, loose-fitting pants she had on.

But for the most part, Maura went unnoticed. The leather soles of her knee-high boots- a slightly lighter brown than her cloak- made no noise on the street. She kept her head down, seeming to pay no heed to anyone that passed. What they didn’t know was that she was quickly scrutinizing each and every one of them. Her brown-flecked, forest green eyes glanced from one person to another, in search of an easy target; someone careless, who had left their coin in a place out of the way, but where it could be easily reached … as well as taken.

No… No… There! Over on her left, just ahead. A slightly overweight man was leaning over a florist’s counter, studying a potted flower that had been placed before him- perhaps something he intended to purchase for his wife or girlfriend. Even though his green robes were simple, the girl could easily tell he was wealthy. No one outside the upper-class could even come close to affording silk of that quality. More importantly, the purse hanging from his belt had been placed on the side facing her, almost at his back. It would be a simple thing to remove it.

She quickened her pace ever-so-slightly. As she passed the man, a small flash of steel relieved him of his money. The once-rich man felt nothing, suspected nothing. The girl hadn’t even broken her stride. By the time he noticed something was wrong, Maura had already gone out of sight around the corner. Her pale lips twitched into a smile as she heard his dismayed cry behind her. She would eat well for a few days now, perhaps even for the rest of the week.

Turning another corner, she pulled off her hood, allowing her dark brown braid to swing free, bumping softly against the back of her neck. After a few more moments, she began humming a quiet, carefree tune to herself, as if nothing had happened.
