A nighttime glow enveloped Alaya’s room, touching every surface with quiet radiance, warming the otherwise empty space. Perched in the corner was a bookshelf filled with varied scrolls on even more varied subjects, from lunar calendars to vegetable recipes and stories about beautiful maidens and handsome princelings. All were written in beautiful script, something that Alaya’s hands had never been capable of creating.

Alaya pulled the sheets closer to her pale chest, her gaze fixed on the nearby windowsill, its gold paint beginning to chip away to reveal the plain dark wood beneath. Her long locks fanned out against her pillow so that with every slight movement a fire seemed to ripple across the pallid fabric. The coy moonlight filtered in past the window frame to rest upon her hair, making it glisten like tiny rubies in sunlight.

Despite the tranquility of the night, Alaya’s heart remained restless and wide-awake. She stared up at the ceiling of her bedroom with her soft lips slightly parted, listening to her own steady breaths as she breathed in and exhaled out. Her heart told her to get up, to go and satisfy what it craved, but her tired body resisted and remained tucked quietly in bed. Alaya pushed her red linen bed sheets aside to stare at her small hands. Harsh pink marks on her palms starkly contrasted the rest of her fair coloration, and she ran her fingers gently across them. She pressed her lips together and winced.

Would it always be like this? To fight so hard, yet have the battle end in vain? All the great firebenders before her would probably mock her, point their fingers and make a spectacle of her failures.

Alaya roughly shook her head, clearing her mind of these thoughts. She was Alaya, Alaya of the great Fire Nation, capable of anything. She swallowed the lump in her throat and smiled into her pillows, letting out a small sigh of the triumph that she was sure would come soon. She would master firebending and make her father proud, and prove to him that she could do it. No longer would she listen to him say, “Alaya, it is best to leave that dangerous art to the men of our nation. It is not necessary, especially when we are not at war.”

Oh, she would surely prove him wrong.

But for now Alaya simply gazed out her window once more to wait for the sun to make her daily rounds across the world. Alaya hoped the sun would make her appearance soon and grace the Fire Nation with her great light, the light from which firebenders found their strength. A smile made its way onto her lips at that thought. Content and patient, Alaya sat there, curled up with her arms around her knees and her face ever watching for the sun to make her entrance.

After hours of keeping silent vigil, the silver glow in her room gradually turned to gold, and Alaya’s eyes adjusted as color gradually returned to her vision. Finally satisfied, Alaya hopped out of bed and headed to her wardrobe to ready herself for the day. Despite her lack of much sleep, her eyes and face were alight with seemingly endless energy. Even if she was tired to the point of losing consciousness, when sunlight touched her features, Alaya could speed through the day at top speed, running on the sole hope the Sun gave her.

She opened the armoire’s wooden doors and picked out her usual outfit. She slipped on her pants, which were a deep wine color that reached to her lower-mid calves. She paired this with red shoes, a slashed crimson wrap that exposed part of her abdomen, and a black bracelet for each wrist. Opening her jewelry case, Alaya took out her favorite deep cardinal red headband and matching necklace and slipped those on.

Since today was not a market day, Alaya had the chance to roam free today while her mother stayed at home and her father went off to collect goods to sell and tended to the family garden. She would help when she got home, but usually her father brushed her off and chose to complete his tasks on his own. It was a matter of pride, Alaya supposed, so most of the time she opted to just help mother prepare dinner and other meals for later on in the week.

With a cheery outlook and a bright day on the way, Alaya headed out of the house and into the streets of the Fire Nation capital, braiding her hair as she went. No need to waste time!
